30% of donors only found out on the day of the drive that they weren’t eligible to give blood. For Geneva University Hospitals, we designed donnons.ch: a platform that tells them beforehand with a quiz, and gets companies on board with trophies.

In brief

Challenge

Let donors know whether they are eligible before the day of the drive, and convince more companies, small businesses in particular, to host one.

What I did

Like everyone on the team, I worked on every part of the project. I was also responsible for signing off the mockups and keeping the visuals consistent.

Result

  • 6/6final grade

Context

Client

Geneva University Hospitals (HUG) run blood drives directly in Geneva companies. Large companies have taken part for years, often as part of their CSR policy; small businesses still need convincing.

Setting

Second-year integration project of the Media Engineering bachelor at HEIG-VD. The HUG were the clients; three teachers followed the project at every sprint review.

Starting point

Workplace drives account for about 10% of blood donations in Geneva, but the HUG provided no material to announce them. A “Generosity Trophy” had rewarded the most committed companies from 2008 to 2010: the HUG wanted to bring it back, with a label and a playful way to explain who can give blood.

Constraints

Four weeks, six people working in Scrum, and a precise set of requirements:

  • Laravel, Vue.js and MySQL required;
  • appointments stay on OneDoc, already used by the HUG;
  • three interfaces: a showcase site to win over companies, a co-branded site in each company’s colours for its employees, and an admin console for the HUG;
  • content that is easy to update and translate.

How can blood drives in partner companies be revitalised to maximise participation?

Decisions

01

Eligibility criteria are told as a story, not listed

Of 67 people surveyed, 71.6% thought they could give blood, only 30.8% after reading the criteria. A hand-illustrated quiz, guided by Roby, tells everyone before booking whether they are eligible.

02

Three trophies to reward as many companies as possible

A single trophy would have rewarded just one company a year: we created three, calculated as ratios to give small businesses a chance, and a label that makes every partner visible.

03

A ready-to-use kit to announce every drive

Posters, social media visuals, a slide for internal screens and an animated story: each company adapts the templates itself, guided by step-by-step instructions.

04

A pixel art world, drawn entirely by hand

The HUG had already used pixel art: we extended it to the whole project. Every illustration and pattern is drawn by hand, over a cream background far from clinical white.

Result

Well done on this work, the result of which could easily be taken over and implemented within our institution.

Client’s feedback (translated from French)
  • Assessment

    “You also managed to make the codes of gaming your own and delivered very rich illustration and composition work.” The teaching team also praised how complete the deliverables were, especially the user guides for the communication templates. (Translated from French.)

    • 6/6final grade
  • Delivered

    Three live sites, a hand-illustrated quiz, three trophies, a label and two communication kits, ready for the HUG to take over.

What I learned

In group projects, I tend to get involved in everything and take on a bit of every task. Here, I learned to let go of what was outside my scope and to trust the other team members.
